The Connection Between Oral and Whole Body Health

In this informative podcast, I discuss the links between dental wellness and overall health with Dr. Jillian Horkan. As a holistic dentist, Dr. Jillian sees clients dealing with various chronic conditions and aims to treat root causes rather than just symptoms.

We explore how periodontal disease and other mouth issues are often indicative of wider system imbalances. From improper brushing techniques to problematic substances like fluoridated products and sugary sodas, many daily habits negatively impact both oral and total body wellness.

Conditions like sleep apnea and teeth grinding are examined in relation to underlying physiological dysfunction. The mouth provides clues into liver and digestive health as well. Dr. Jillian stresses an approach taking account of environmental, dietary and genetic factors rather than just locally treating teeth.

Insurance challenges and issues with compartmentalization in conventional medical models are discussed. We also touch on the importance of preventing dental diseases not just for aesthetics and function, but to preclude serious secondary impacts on other organ systems later in life.

It was fascinating to gain insight into the dental-whole body connection and more holistic paradigm. I left with renewed appreciation for oral hygiene as a gateway to prevention and informed alternatives to traditional fillings and fluoride regimens. This integrative perspective on health is clearly critical.
